WHAT WE DO

Bringing Clarity to the Public

CHT clarifies society’s most urgent challenges with technology, which in turn empowers the public to act.

Technology is a near-constant presence in our lives, influencing our culture, our relationships, and our psychologies. But the public often struggles to decipher the negative impact of technology as it’s unfolding — or envision better paths forward with tech design. Center for Humane Technology demystifies our current challenges with tech by creating clarity around the key drivers in the tech ecosystem. We allow society to discover its agency, from the individual level up to the institutional.

Our Vision

“It’s Not Just You.”

Technology is a collective challenge. The problems that individuals experience with products, like social media and AI, are part of an invisible yet formidable system of design choices, incentives, and business models. We strive to demystify this ecosystem. By doing so, individuals, families, and communities understand that they aren’t alone in their challenges with modern tech, and that new directions with technology are available and achievable.

Nuanced Discourse

CHT elevates the conversation around technology by articulating the root causes of misaligned tech — including the incentives driving poor tech design — and laying out key points of agency for society. When we improve our ability to discuss what is happening to us with technology, we improve our ability to build consensus, surface interventions, and take action.

Holding the Tech Industry Accountable

We believe it’s essential that tech companies be held accountable for their design choices, and take responsibility for how their products impact society. We empower the public to participate in this call for greater accountability.

Our systemic approach

CHT engages the public across all levels of society in order to cultivate shared understanding of key tech issues, and lay the groundwork for individual and collective action.
