This is going to be the most productive decade in the history of our species, says Mustafa Suleyman, author of The Coming Wave, CEO of Inflection AI, and founder of Google’s DeepMind. But in order to truly reap the benefits of AI, we need to learn how to contain it. Paradoxically, part of that will mean collectively saying no to certain forms of progress. As an industry leader reckoning with a future that’s about to be ‘turbocharged’ Mustafa says we can all play a role in shaping the technology in hands-on ways and by advocating for appropriate governance.
Mustafa Suleyman is co-founder and CEO of Inflection AI, an AI-first consumer software company. Before that, he co-founded DeepMind, a leading AI company that was acquired by Google. There he was Head of Applied AI and ran a division called DeepMind for Google which was responsible for integrating the company’s technology across a wide range of Google products. He joined Google full-time in 2019, becoming VP of AI products & AI policy. In 2022, he joined Greylock as a Venture Partner, where he specializes in AI investing. He is the author of The Coming Wave, published by Crown in the US in September 2023. He is also on the Board of The Economist newspaper and is a Senior Fellow at The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, at Harvard Kennedy School.
